Valeria Caso

Prof Valeria Caso is a consultant neurologist at the stroke unit of Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital at the University of Perugia, Italy. 


She earned her medical degree from the University of Perugia. She specialised in neurology with exceptional distinction, achieving a score of 50/50 with honours. She also enriched her knowledge as an Erasmus research fellow at esteemed institutions such as Christian Albrecht University in Kiel, the University of Heidelberg, and the University of Zürich.
Her research endeavours have encompassed diverse areas and include participating in 20 multicentre trials in various capacities, including steering committees. She actively engages in international research initiatives on heart-brain interactions, intracerebral hemorrhage, and acute stroke treatment.
She has Italian national certification as a full professor in neurology and is acknowledged as a visiting professor in neurology at the University of Belgrade.
She has served as president of the European Stroke Organisation (2016-2018) and as past president and co-chair of the European Stroke Action Plan (2016-2018). She also contributes her expertise as a member of the ESO-EAST Steering Committee and as a Founding Member of “Osservatorio Ictus Italia”. 
She is an honorary member of the Société Française Neuro-Vasculaire (SFNV) and has held the position of treasurer at the World Stroke Organization since 2022.
Her numerous awards include an ESO Spirit of Excellence Award in 2020, and the ESO Presidential Award in 2022. 
She has published more than 300 articles. Her h-index is 70 (17517 Google Scholar citations).
