Lorenza Spagnuolo

Angels Team Leader Europe

After graduating in Biotechnology from the University of Florence in 2009, Lorenza attended the University of Siena where she achieved the Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology with honours. As the recipient of an Erasmus scholarship for her MSc, she then had the opportunity to work in the Laboratory of Paediatric Infectious Diseases in the Netherlands.

She received her PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele of Milano in 2015, then spent one year as a postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology and Immunopathology at Sapienza University of Rome.

Lorenza’s curiosity and her desire for knowledge and discovery have always guided her career in scientific and biomedical research. As a result she spent five years working in microbiology and immunology, both in Italy and abroad.

Lorenza joined the Angels team at the very beginning (June 2016) with the mission of improving stroke care quality in the central regions of Italy. After three years as an Angels consultant, she became teamleader of the West Angels Team (Portugal, Spain and Italy), continuing her mission to help the stroke community strive for excellence.

Lorenza says, “I had the absolute privilege to join the Angels family when everything started – with a lot of excitement and motivation, but aware of the challenges of implementing such a big and impactful initiative in the field. Looking back at those days, it’s still hard to believe the great achievements we all reached as a team and how much we have grown – as a team, as the Angels international community, and in terms of the knowledge acquired and expertise developed. The thing I’m most proud of is seeing a tremendous improvement in stroke care in our countries. It is simply amazing to think of how many stroke patients did benefit and will benefit from this.”

For Lorenza, this motivation is even greater as she assumes her new role of regional director, Europe. She has pledged to put all her commitment into providing leadership and role modelling for the Angel consultants in her region.
