Maia’s journey in medicine began at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she obtained her medical degree. Driven by a deep interest in the complexities of the brain and acute care, she pursued a specialization in neurology. She subsequently completed a highly specialized Fellowship in Cerebrovascular Diseases at Fleni, a leading neurological institution in Latin America. This rigorous training provided her with the foundational knowledge and clinical skills necessary to manage complex stroke cases, laying the groundwork for her future career in vascular neurology.
Maia is deeply committed to advancing the science of stroke treatment. Throughout her career, she has actively participated in significant epidemiological studies in Argentina, most notably the EstEPA study (Estudio Epidemiológico Poblacional del ACV). Furthermore, she has contributed to the development of new therapies by serving as both a Sub-Investigator (SI) and Principal Investigator (PI) for various clinical trials. These experiences have given her a comprehensive understanding of the gap between clinical research and real-world patient care.
Before joining the corporate sector, Maia served as the Coordinator of the Vascular Neurology area at Sanatorio de los Arcos. It was during this tenure that her relationship with the Angels Initiative began. As a coordinator, she received invaluable support from Angels to optimize their stroke pathway and improve quality metrics. Witnessing the tangible impact of the initiative on her own team and patients inspired her to become an Angels speaker, advocating for better stroke care across the region. She eventually transitioned to Boehringer Ingelheim as a Medical Advisor, and today, she is honored to lead the team as the Angels Team Lead.
Her transition from a clinician receiving Angels' support to leading the team is a source of immense pride. She joined this initiative because she has seen firsthand how it transforms hospitals and saves lives.
She says, “My motivation is simple yet powerful: to ensure that more patients receive the highest standard of care and access to life-saving treatments. Leading this team allows me to expand that impact on a much larger scale, ensuring that ‘giving life a chance’ is a reality for stroke patients across the region.”
