Dr Octavio Pontes is Professor of Neurology and Chief of the Stroke Service at Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo. He graduated from medical school at the Federal University of Ceará in 1999 and completed his neurology residency and PhD at Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo in 2003. His stroke training includes a fellowship in vascular neurology and neurosonology at Hospital Vall dHebron, Barcelona, Spain, and post-doctoral studies at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston,USA.

He is a past president of the Brazilian Stroke Society, and currently the coordinator of the National AVC Research Network established by the Ministry of Health. He is co-chair of the Education Committee of the World Stroke Organization (WSO) and Editor-in-Chief of the World Stroke Academy, the educational platform of the WSO. He has dedicated himself to clinical research involving cerebrovascular diseases and neurological emergencies, addressing topics such as stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, reperfusion therapy for ischemic stroke, obstructive sleep apnea, neurointensivism, and telemedicine for stroke.
