Hospital Serena del Mar continues to write a new chapter in the healthcare history of Cartagena and the Caribbean region, thanks to excellent medical practices and superior clinical outcomes. This is especially important for the Caribbean region of Colombia, where healthcare centers are continually striving to improve the quality of patient care. A testament to this is the recent accolade bestowed by the World Stroke Organization as part of the WSO Angels Awards. These awards honor hospitals that have successfully implemented effective stroke treatment protocols and have monitored and provided data to aid research and identify areas for improvement in stroke care.

According to Dr Manuel García, a neurology specialist at Hospital Serena del Mar and leader of the initiative within the institution, stroke, formerly known as thrombosis, has a high mortality rate worldwide. “It has been established that stroke is the second leading cause of death globally and the leading cause of long-term disability,” he says. “In Colombia, stroke is the second leading cause of death from medical causes.”

Hospital Serena del Mar won its second gold award in 2024. This recognition comes after the hospital trained all its healthcare, medical, and administrative staff involved in stroke patient care, including nursing assistants, nurses, orderlies, emergency physicians, radiology specialists, and more. Additionally, the hospital has implemented evidence-based guidelines and special pathways for the care of these patients.

"

This accomplishment is a major milestone not only for Hospital Serena del Mar but also for the entire Caribbean region of Colombia. In Cartagena, where the hospital is located, and across the region, this achievement underscores the commitment to improving healthcare standards and ensuring that patients receive the best possible care during critical medical emergencies such as strokes.

Cartagena, known for its stunning colonial architecture, vibrant culture, and beautiful Caribbean coastline, is one of Colombia’s most cherished tourist destinations. This city, steeped in history and charm, offers a blend of old-world allure and modern amenities. Visitors can explore the walled city with its cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, enjoy the lively atmosphere of Getsemaní, or relax on the pristine beaches of the Rosario Islands. The city’s rich cultural heritage is complemented by its warm and welcoming people, making it a must-visit location for travelers from around the globe.

"

The award-winning status of Hospital Serena del Mar for stroke care not only enhances the city’s reputation for excellence but also provides peace of mind to both locals and visitors. Knowing that there is a world-class healthcare facility capable of providing exceptional care in the event of a stroke adds another layer of safety and security to the Cartagena experience.
