ER Consulting is the largest provider of consultative emergency medical services in the private sector in Africa. Its full-time doctors and accredited locums treat over 40,000 patients per month, in emergency units in 25 private hospitals throughout South Africa.
Hospitals that oursource emergency care to ER Consulting had won a total of 33 Angels Awards by the end of quarter one of 2025, but some had yet to get off the mark. Recognizing an opportunity to standardize stroke services in these units, and bring new doctors up to speed, ER Consulting co-hosted an Angels Day event with Angels South Africa at the beginning of June.
Two representatives from each hospital were invited to attend, but could only register for the event after completing two elearnings in the Angels Academy and submitting their certificates to the organizers. The elearnings that had been selected were NIHSS Online Training Course and Patient Discharge – topics not covered by the Angels Day agenda, explained Angels consultant Maxeen Murugan, who coordinated the event.
As well as presentations on pathway optimization, hyperacute decision-making, CT imaging, and quality monitoring, participants gained insights into the importance of creating a stroke team. This topic, which was recently tried and tested at an Angels Day in Indonesia, was presented by Dr Peter Anderson, an emergency medicine specialist at Mediclinic Sandton, and designed to address interdepartmental communication challenges at some hospitals.
Post-event feedback from participants highlighted the value of pre-learning to enrich the experience of in-person workshops, and gaining a deeper understanding of why quality monitoring was important.
